United World College - Fieldhouse
Montezuma, NM is home to the U.S. campus of the United World College, which holds several International Baccalaureate Programs worldwide. Garrett Smith Ltd. worked with Einhorn Yaffee Prescott on both the remodel of the historic Montezuma Castle and the design of the Edith Lansing Field House. The field house, a 15,000 sf activity center, consists of a dance studio and performance space, student store, gymnasium, weight/exercise room, squash and racquetball courts, and locker rooms. It connects the restored and refurbished Castle and lower campus via outdoor gathering areas, including a large circular entry plaza, a long connecting stairway, and a natural amphitheater carved into the hillside.
GSL developed a Master Plan for the entire campus, including new building locations, complete infrastructure upgrades and a wide variety of campus related improvements.
The Edith Lansing Field House was part of first phase construction, creating a campus center for 200 students and 50 faculty. Pre-planning investigated structural and environmental systems to give the college the best long-term value for use, operations and maintenance while keeping sustainability a constant in design decision making.
