MacArthur Elementary School
This is a neighborhood school who’s main building was erected after World War II. A major classroom addition was added in the 1960’s. The school was considered for vacation and demolition not long ago, but was saved by neighborhood advocates. This school was the first selected by APS and the City of Albuquerque to develop their unique joint Infant and Toddler Programs. GSL helped develop the program and design the interior spaces and outdoor play areas that have become a model for future applications. The main building design focused on repairing classroom windows, upgrading lighting, ventilation and mechanical systems. We “cleaned up” ad hoc remodels in the main corridor to eliminate countless years of electrical lighting, power and technology conduit build-up. The entire building was painted inside and stuccoed outside while remedying chronic structural and drainage problems. The remodel includes a new administration area and ADA accessible restrooms and access.
The 1960’s classroom addition received the 2 new COA/APS classrooms located in unused space. Restrooms were remodeled and general structural and aesthetic repairs made. A $600,000 budget was judiciously applied to chronic and functional problems, code violations first while giving the school a much needed face lift and operational improvements to brighten the learning environment for students, teachers, administrators and parents.
